A occuparsi della serie, che sarà diffusa esclusivamente tramite Disney+, saranno i creatori di Once Upon A Time Eddy Kitsis e Adam Horowitz; inoltre è confermato il ritorno di Josh Gad e Luke Evans nel ruolo dei protagonisti. Alan Menken dovrebbe tornare a occuparsi della colonna sonora e delle canzoni.

Si tratterà di una miniserie musical di sei episodi; secondo le prime informazioni sarà ambientata molti anni prima degli eventi de La Bella e la Bestia e ci permetterà di conoscere meglio il mondo della fiaba. Al momento nessun altro attore del cast originale, quindi nemmeno Emma Watson né Dan Stevens, dovrebbe riprendere il proprio ruolo, anche se è possibile che vengano coinvolti almeno per una comparsa.

Josh Gad si occuperà anche della sceneggiatura insieme a Kitsis e Horowitz, e come loro sarà produttore esecutivo. La collaborazione sarebbe nata durante la lavorazione della serie cancellata Muppets Live Another Day su cui il trio stava lavorando.

Si tratta di una versione alternativa di Days in the Sun, che doveva essere cantata dalla madre del principe. Il regista spiega che è stato necessario modificare la scena perché l’attrice scelta per interpretare la regina somigliava troppo alla Maga Agata e gli spettatori mostrarono confusione durante gli screen test (ovvero dei test durante i quali viene proiettato il film non finito di modo da apportare modifiche a seconda delle reazioni del pubblico).

Intervistato da Deadline, Sean Bailey (presidente di Disney Pictures) ha affermato che per il momento non ci sono piani per un sequel del film di Bill Condon, mentre è possibile invece l’arrivo di un prequel o di uno spin-off.

Difficile dire su quale personaggio potrebbe incentrarsi un film del genere; sappiamo però che prima di realizzare il remake del classico animato, Disney Pictures era al lavoro su The Beast, una reinterpretazione in chiave dark della storia del Principe trasformato in Bestia. Sarà ripescato questo progetto?

Travestita da vecchia mendicante in cerca di riparo dalla tempesta, la maga viene crudelmente respinta dal Principe. Per punirlo, la donna getta un maleficio sul castello trasformando il Principe in una Bestia e i membri della servitù in oggetti domestici. Agata spiega che, per spezzare l’incantesimo, la Bestia dovrà imparare ad amare e farsi amare a sua volta prima che cada l’ultimo petalo di una rosa magica… altrimenti rimarrà una Bestia per sempre e i suoi servitori non torneranno mai più umani, restando imprigionati nel castello per tutta l’eternità.

In questa versione, dunque, oltre ad avere un nome la fata è anche la narratrice della storia.

La seconda featurette, questa volta in lingua inglese, è dedicata al personaggio di Belle e ci parla di come la principessa interpretata da Emma Watson è una donna moderna, ribelle e che fa della cultura la sua arma.

Questa volta si tratta della clip in cui la Bestia invita Belle a cena, mentre gli oggetti parlanti gli intimano di essere gentile con lei. Intervistata da Entertainment Weekly per la promozione del film La Bella e la Bestia, l’attrice Emma Watson si è soffermata sulla sua Belle, sulle somiglianze e differenze con il classico animato e sul diverso background che il regista Bill Condon ha voluto regalarle nel live action.

Partendo dal suo desiderio di “volere di più” della vita al villaggio, che ben conosciamo fin dalla prima canzone del film animato, il regista ha immaginato un nuovo contesto in cui inserire il personaggio. In particolare, nel paese del live action le bambine hanno un solo destino, quello di fare i lavori domestici, mentre i maschietti ricevono un’istruzione e imparano a leggere e a scrivere.

Belle non ci sta e per questo decide prima di insegnare a una bambina a leggere (scena che vediamo anche nel trailer), poi di costruire un macchinario simile a una lavatrice, così che le altre donne del villaggio, libere dai loro lavori di casa, possano dedicarsi agli studi. Ma i suoi concittadini non apprezzano la sua iniziativa e, invece che ringraziarla, distruggono il suo lavoro.

“Credono che le donne non debbano leggere, ma non solo”, racconta la Watson. “Vedono Belle come una minaccia e sono profondamente sospettosi della sua intelligenza. Distruggere la sua lavatrice simboleggia non solo il voler fare a pezzi il suo lavoro, sul quale ha speso molte ore, ma anche il voler danneggiare il suo spirito progressista e spingerla a conformarsi verso una versione più socialmente accettabile di lei”.

Ovviamente tutto cambia quando la ragazza incontra la Bestia: nonostante le apparenze, lui è diverso dalla gente del villaggio e dimostra sensibilità e intelligenza, nonché una grande passione per la lettura che sarà ciò che alla fine li farà innamorare l’uno dell’altra.
