Il sequel, invece, non è un miracolo, anche perché i miracoli accadono una volta sola e difficilmente si ripetono. Ma per certi versi è qualcosa di meglio: una lezione appresa a menadito, la prova che l’arte non è mai punto di arrivo ed è sempre punto di partenza per spingersi oltre, beyond, come recita il titolo del terzo capitolo che chiuderà la saga. Tutto quello che avevamo amato in Into the Spider-Verse è qui portato all’ennesima potenza: un virtuosismo continuo, un’esplosione di trovate geniali, di soluzioni creative a problemi che prima di questo film probabilmente neanche esistevano, una sovrapposizione e contaminazione di stili da far girare la testa, semplicemente una stravaganza artistica di cui non saremo mai sazi. C’è molto amore per l’arte dell’animazione, c’è leadership, c’è lungimiranza. Lord e Miller hanno seminato, ma hanno anche osservato attentamente il raccolto: all’interno di questa crew sono stati assoldati pure coloro che di Spider-Verse avevano ricevuto il testimone, come i character artist di Arcane e Il Gatto con gli Stivali 2, e che ora vengono richiamati ad aggiungere un altro tassello a questo puzzle che è la rivoluzione dell’animazione.

E allora gli si perdona tutto: la sagra della citazione e del cameo – che avrebbe anche un po’ stufato -, il ritmo sbilanciato della seconda metà, persino il grave tradimento delle aspettative quando scopriamo che in realtà è solo un lungo episodio di una serie Tv e il finale è rimandato alla prossima puntata. Importa poco; c’è in gioco molto più che una storia di supereroi, e questo è un film che non fa sconti e non prende scorciatoie, che spinge sull’acceleratore e ti chiede di stare al passo, che fa della ridondanza uno stilema.

Come abbiano fatto a tenere in piedi questa cattedrale non si sa, è un po’ il lavoro di un genio, e un po’ sicuramente una magia. Un grosso merito ce l’ha senza dubbio il compositing, che riesce a tenere le fila di un film complesso, stracolmo di dettagli, personaggi, VFX, camei, elementi in background, direzionando sempre e comunque il focus verso l’azione principale. Ci sono film con shot molto più semplici che riescono a smarrirsi in un bicchier d’acqua; questo, inspiegabilmente, non perde mai di vista ciò che è importante. La sceneggiatura segue di pari passo: nonostante il tripudio di new entry, universi, canoni, informazioni, spiegoni, non c’è un solo istante in cui dimentichiamo che questa è la storia di un adolescente che si chiama Miles Morales, che sta diventando adulto e deve affrontare ciò che affrontano tutti i ragazzi: l’incontro col grande mondo al di fuori delle pareti di casa. Questo nocciolo di autenticità che sta al cuore di un film visivamente da capogiro era il segreto di Into the Spider-Verse (ma anche di I Mitchell contro le Macchine), e forse la ragione per cui Lord e Miller fino ad ora non hanno sbagliato un colpo.

Andrà rivisto ancora e ancora per sviscerare e assimilare tutte le assurdità che contiene (una su tutte: Spider-Punk ha un modello diverso per ogni elemento del suo design e ognuno si muove a un framerate differente!). Ma una cosa è certa: quando questa trilogia sarà completa avrà, e per certi versi sta già avendo, lo stesso impatto che hanno avuto Biancaneve e i sette nani e Toy Story. Ci sarà un prima e un dopo Spider-Verse, e l’animazione non sarà più la stessa.

Miles Morales torna nel nuovo capitolo della saga Spider-Verse, vincitrice di un premio Oscar, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Dopo essersi riunito con Gwen Stacy, l’amichevole Spider-Man di quartiere di Brooklyn viene catapultato nel Multiverso, dove incontra una squadra di “Spider-Eroi” incaricata di proteggerne l’esistenza. Ma quando gli eroi si scontrano su come affrontare una nuova minaccia, Miles si ritrova contro gli altri “Ragni” e dovrà ridefinire cosa significa essere un eroe per poter salvare le persone che ama di più.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse è diretto da Joaquim Dos Santos (La leggenda di Korra), Kemp Powers (Soul) e Justin K. Thompson (Star Wars: Clone Wars, Spider-Man: Un nuovo universo). Mentre il team di registi è cambiato, restano alle redini del progetto i geniali produttori del primo capitolo Phil Lord e Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie, I Mitchell contro le Macchine).

Oltre al film è in arrivo un cortometraggio che sarà presentato sempre a giugno al Festival del cinema di Annecy. Si intitolerà The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story e racconterà di una giornata particolarmente tosta per Miles Morales, che finisce per sperimentare per la prima volta un attacco di panico. L’episodio lo costringe a confrontarsi con la manifestazione della sua ansia; Miles capirà che chiedere aiuto a volte è un atto di coraggio tanto quanto proteggere la città dalle forze del male.

Non tornerà dunque nessuno dei registi del successo del 2018 – Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey e Rodney Rothman – ognuno impegnato con i propri progetti. Soltanto Ramsey avrà il ruolo di produttore esecutivo, insieme ad Aditya Sood. Saranno invece gli stessi i produttori, ossia Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad e Christina Steinberg, a cui si unisce come co-produttore Alonzo Ruvalcaba.

David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) sarà lo sceneggiatore insieme agli stessi Lord e Miller.

“Il team di Spider-Man: Un nuovo universo ha alzato l’asticella in maniera vertiginosa, siamo onorati di essere stati scelti per la sfida di portare avanti la storia di Miles Morales”, hanno dichiarato i tre registi.

Per Dos Santos e Thompson – entrambi veterani di Sony Pictures Animation – si tratterà del debutto alla regia. Il primo ha lavorato a serie animate come Avatar: La leggenda di Aang, Voltron: Legendary Defender e Teen Titans. Il secondo è stato il production designer del primo Spider-Man: Un nuovo universo (vincendo un Annie Award per il suo lavoro) e ha ricoperto lo stesso ruolo per altri film di Sony Animation, come la duologia di Piovono Polpette.

Infine, Kemp Powers è il co-regista attualmente nominato all’Oscar del film Pixar Soul, nonché il primo regista afroamericano a dirigere un film d’animazione Pixar.

Il sequel di Spider-Man: Un nuovo universo arriverà al cinema il 7 ottobre 2022.

La pellicola ispirata al libro di William Joyce ha segnato il debutto alla regia di Ramsey, e purtroppo anche il suo primo insuccesso: nonostante abbia guadagnato il doppio del budget di produzione, il film DreamWorks ha perso comunque 83 milioni di dollari diventando uno dei più grandi flop dello studio.

In una recente intervista a Comicbook, il regista ha affermato che gradirebbe tornare a lavorare con i personaggi de Le Cinque Leggende in un eventuale secondo capitolo, soprattutto perché la sua nuova esperienza lo porterebbe a evitare alcuni errori fatti con il primo episodio:

“Mi piacerebbe essere coinvolto di nuovo in qualcosa del genere, per il semplice motivo che ci sono molti aspetti che vorrei migliorare del primo film, cose che l’inesperienza o le circostanze non ci hanno permesso di fare. Mi piacerebbe molto. Vorrei lavorare con alcune di quelle persone di nuovo, avere una seconda chance con quei personaggi. Penso che se la meritino. Li adoro davvero. Quando lavori a qualcosa per tre anni, sviluppi un legame con questi piccoli personaggi immaginari. Diventano come la tua famiglia. E vorrei dare loro giustizia.”

Ramsey ha parlato in seguito della lezione imparata dal suo primo flop, sottolineando come Le Cinque Leggende lo abbia fatto crescere come artista:

“Questa esperienza mi ha insegnato veramente che puoi mettere tutto nel tuo lavoro, tutto il tuo cuore e tutta la tua anima, ma alla fine il risultato non dipende da te, e tu non sei soltanto una persona che ha lavorato o ha fatto una determinata cosa. Sei molto di più, ed è questo ciò che conta. Credo che questa lezione mi abbia aiutato ad andare avanti. Ci sono la tua famiglia, la tua storia: c’è molto altro oltre quel singolo lavoro che hai fatto una volta. Comprendere questo mi ha aiutato ad affrontare la tempesta e uscire illeso dall’altra parte”.

Per quanto riguarda la trama o i personaggi l’unico indizio che abbiamo viene proprio dalla scena epilogo di SpiderVerse, in cui compare Miguel O’Hara / Spider-Man 2099. Per il resto, non è stato diffuso alcun dettaglio sulle new entry che incontreremo nel sequel.

Infine, l’attrice Hailee Steinfeld, doppiatrice originale di Spider-Gwen, ha fornito a Entertainment Tonight un update sul chiacchierato spin-off tutto “al femminile”, annunciato nel 2018 alla luce del successo di Into the SpiderVerse, ma poi mai più menzionato da Sony Animation. Le notizie in realtà non sono troppo buone: “Non ne so nulla, non sono venuta a conoscenza di progetti in merito. Penso proprio che questo periodo di lockdown sia perfetto per iniziare a parlarne. Ma ovviamente credo che tutto sia stato messo in sospeso per il momento. Perciò no, non ho ricevuto alcuna notizia di recente”.

Secondo le intenzioni di Sony, lo spin-off dovrebbe essere incentrato su Spider-Gwen e su altre eroine del mondo di Spider-Man come Madame Web, Spider-Woman e Silk. Probabile, però, che lo studio voglia concentrarsi sul sequel prima di mettere in cantiere anche gli spin-off.

Nato e sempre rimasto a Los Angeles, California, Peter Ramsey ha iniziato la sua carriera come storyboard artist in numerosi film live action tra cui titoli come Minority Report, Cast Away, Independence Day, Men in Black, Il Grinch, Essere John Malkovich, Fight Club e L’incredibile Hulk. Per DreamWorks Animation ha diretto il suo primo lungometraggio, Le 5 leggende (2012). Il successo è esploso poi nel 2018 grazie a Spider-Man: Un nuovo universo, pellicola che Ramsey ha co-diretto con Bob Persichetti e Rodney Rothman per Sony Pictures Animation. Per questo film è diventato il primo regista afroamericano a vincere il Premio Oscar al Miglior film d’animazione.

Spider-Man: Un nuovo universo e Le 5 leggende hanno una storia in comune, quella dell’eroe che nel ricercare chi è veramente finisce per salvare il mondo e ispirare gli altri ad essere forti e coraggiosi. Hai una connessione particolare con questo tipo di storie?

Peter Ramsey: “Penso che tutti la abbiano. Ho pensato spesso alle somiglianze tra questi due film. Credo che si tratti semplicemente della tipica storia di un giovane che scopre chi è veramente e che ci sono altri come lui con i quali può stringere dei legami. Una sorta di passaggio dall’adolescenza all’età adulta. Ci sono innumerevoli versioni di questa storia, si tratta solo di arricchirla: nel caso di Spider-Verse, l’aspetto del multiverso la rende nuova e originale”.

Le musiche di Spider-Man: Un nuovo universo sono attentamente curate per affiancarsi alle immagini e al ritmo. Come avete lavorato per la colonna sonora? 

Peter Ramsey: “Avevamo un grandissimo supervisore musicale: Kier Lehman è stato bravissimo ad aiutarci nel trovare brani vecchi, ma anche artisti nuovi che potessero integrarsi con il mondo di Miles. Abbiamo sempre cercato di ragionare dal punto di vista di Miles, ad ogni nuova canzone ci chiedevamo: se Miles la ascoltasse, gli piacerebbe? Questo è l’approccio con cui abbiamo curato l’aspetto musicale. Inoltre abbiamo chiesto al compositore Daniel Pemberton di utilizzare anche l’hip hop e lo scratch per dare alla colonna sonora questo tipo di feeling. Penso che questo abbia aiutato ad amalgamare le canzoni pop che abbiamo utilizzato: non sembrano semplicemente inserite nel film, ma sembrano far parte di una colonna sonora unitaria”.

Qual è stata la sfida più grande nel realizzare il film?

Peter Ramsey: “Credo che la sfida più grande per tutti noi sia stata mantenere il focus sull’arco emozionale di Miles. Sul fatto che è un ragazzino che sta crescendo, non sa bene cosa fare della sua vita, è indeciso tra la famiglia e l’affetto che nutre per lo zio, e su come tutto ciò dovesse inserirsi nella storia di lui che diventa un supereroe e ha a che fare con personaggi da altri universi. Con tutto quello che succede nella trama, è stata una sfida mantenere sempre il punto di vista di Miles e non lasciare che si perdesse nelle grandi scene d’azione. Abbiamo dovuto guardare a ogni elemento del film e decidere quanto valesse nell’economia della storia”.

Molte persone fanno fatica a definire lo stile di animazione che avete scelto per il film. Tu come lo descriveresti?

Peter Ramsey: “Direi che abbiamo scelto uno stile più grafico che risalta molto. Ricorda le tavole dei fumetti, con immagini nette e dinamiche. È animato in CGI ma con un numero di frame minore, perciò sembra differente da tutti gli altri film in computer grafica. Ma secondo me questo lo rende più unico, esattamente come un fumetto. È decisamente diverso, ma lo abbiamo voluto intenzionalmente così”.

Spider-Verse ha avuto una crew molto multiculturale e questo si rispecchia nel tema del film, ovvero che tutti possono indossare la maschera, tutti sono supereroi. In che modo la crew e l’ambiente in cui avete lavorato ha influenzato il film e viceversa?

Peter Ramsey: “Qualsiasi film tu sia realizzando, in qualche modo, finisce per rispecchiare la tua vita. Con questo film si vedono immediatamente i risultati di tutte quelle persone che, venendo da percorsi di vita completamente diversi, si sono radunate per creare qualcosa di speciale. A un certo punto abbiamo avuto circa 800 persone al lavoro in dipartimenti diversi, e tutte loro erano emozionate all’idea di fare qualcosa di unico e di nuovo. Quando il clima lavorativo è così, tutti iniziano ad assorbire questo tipo di energia positiva, e penso che sia esattamente ciò che è successo con Spider-Man: Un nuovo universo. Tutti volevano venire a lavorare con noi. Coloro che si occupavano degli effetti speciali a Sony ImageWorks ci chiedevano sempre più lavoro. Tutti avevano colto esattamente lo spirito del film, e questa è solamente la prova di cosa succede quando si permette agli altri di essere creativi, di mettere loro stessi nel loro lavoro e si dà loro la possibilità di essere artisti e non semplici ingranaggi di una macchina”.

Sei il primo regista afroamericano ad aver vinto l’Oscar per il Miglior Film d’Animazione, e sei anche il primo ad essere invitato a View Conference. Che cosa ne pensi?

Peter Ramsey: “Ci sono molti artisti afroamericani nell’industria dell’animazione, e molti di loro sono in ruoli dietro le quinte, diciamo, in posizioni che purtroppo non ricevono attenzione. Un mio caro amico è tra i supervisori degli effetti visivi di Frozen 2. Un altro, Bruce Smith, è regista e sceneggiatore. È vero però che storicamente ci sono stati meno artisti neri, ma questo ha a che fare con l’istruzione, perché molti afroamericani non avevano accesso a un livello di istruzione alto negli Stati Uniti fino a poco tempo fa, nemmeno nel campo dell’arte. Quando ero piccolo, io abitavo vicino a Hollywood, ma non ho mai nemmeno pensato di poter lavorare nell’industria del cinema, perché non vedevo tante persone nere nei ruoli che io sognavo di ricoprire. E anche questa è una barriera che ancora oggi dobbiamo abbattere. Per questo, ogni volta che ne ho la possibilità, mi piace parlare con i giovani e incoraggiarli a sognare. Ci vorrà ancora un po’ per ottenere il giusto riconoscimento, ma fortunatamente sempre più persone stanno avendo l’opportunità di fare il loro lavoro dei sogni”.

Pensi che le reazioni positive attorno a Spider-Man: Un nuovo universo daranno ad altri studi e altri registi la possibilità di sperimentare e creare qualcosa di nuovo e differente?

Peter Ramsey: “Non so se ci sono piani di questo tipo negli altri studi, ma per quanto riguarda il mondo dell’animazione posso dire che c’è decisamente interesse a questo approccio e tanti registi sarebbero interessati a provare. Molti sono venuti da me ringraziandomi per aver fatto questo film. Gli artisti ora si sentono più liberi di osare e rischiare con qualcosa di nuovo. Anche presso Sony ci sono numerosi progetti con registi diversi, e tutti sembrano intenzionati a provare con uno stile differente che sia artisticamente rivoluzionario”.

Leggi fumetti? Qual è la tua versione preferita di Spider-Man?

Peter Ramsey: “Sono sempre stato un lettore di fumetti. Sono un grande fan della Marvel, le loro storie mi hanno portato ad amare il fumetto. Leggo anche DC e ho letto delle storie europee tramite il magazine Heavy Metal. Per quanto riguarda Spider-Man, ovviamente adoro Miles. Era impossibile non affezionarmi a lui dato che ho lavorato al suo film. Molte persone che hanno lavorato con noi si rispecchiavano in Miles, e anche io, sicuramente. Mi è sempre piaciuto anche il Peter Parker originale. I primi fumetti che ho comprato con i miei soldi erano sempre quelli di Spider-Man. Mi colpiva come nelle sue storie Peter fosse arrabbiato, ritenesse i poteri di Spider-Man quasi una maledizione, ma allo stesso tempo sentisse la responsabilità di dover essere un supereroe. Questa complessità del personaggio da ragazzino mi affascinava”.

Infine, cosa puoi anticiparci sul tuo futuro?

Peter Ramsey: “Sto lavorando a nuovi progetti. Sarò produttore esecutivo per un film d’animazione per Netflix. E in qualche modo penso che sarò coinvolto anche nel sequel di Spider-Verse. Ancora è troppo presto per dirlo, perché hanno appena iniziato a lavorarci, ma vorrei ritornare nel mondo di Miles e continuare a raccontare la sua storia”.

Ramsey is an illustrator, writer and director. Aside from Spider-Verse, he also directed the DreamWorks feature Rise of the Guardians. He also worked as a storyboard artist on many live-action projects, such as Men in Black, Godzilla (1998), A.I., Minority Report and Wrinkle in Time.

Into the Spider-Verse and Rise of the Guardians seem to have a similar type of story. You have the hero, who is unknown in the beginning, has no identity, then goes on this adventure and emotional journey where he finds that identity, all while saving the world, and encouraging other people to be strong, be brave. Do you have a personal attachment to these types of stories?

Peter Ramsey: “I think probably everyone has a personal attachment to those kinds of stories. I thought about this a lot, as well, about these similarities between the two. I think it’s just a basic story of a young person discovering who they are and realizing that there’s other people like them that they can have a community with. It’s sort of a basic, rite of passage story. There are obviously lots of versions of that same story and I think, in the case of Spider-Verse, the idea of the Multiverse makes it sort of fresher and more unusual, but it really is like a basic old story.”

In animated movies, next to the score, there’s usually one or two pop songs, and a lot of times, these songs feel out of place, doesn’t fit the scene, and/or the nature of the score. This was the complete opposite in Spider-Verse, the music and the songs matched perfectly and were in flow. How did you and your team managed to do that? Did you have to take some extra care to it?

Peter Ramsey: “Yeah, there was a lot of good care put into it. Our movie had really good music supervisors for one thing. Kier Lehman was really great in helping us find new or old stuff, when we needed, but also try to find new artists who fit Miles’ world. The key was always trying to look at Miles’ point of view, and making sure that, if Miles heard this song in the movie, would he like it? Would it feel like something that he would want to listen to? That kind of thinking formed a backbone with how we approach the music. Also, Daniel Pemberton, who did the score, we asked him if he could incorporate some feel of contemporary hip hop and scratching and beats into his dramatic score, so we could have a score that would have some of that feeling, too. I think that helped the music sit in a little bit better, too, that it doesn’t feel like throwing random tracks in, but something that belongs to it altogether.”

What was the biggest challenge when working on this project?

Peter Ramsey: “I think the biggest challenge that all of us felt was how to keep the focus on Miles’ emotional story. As a young man growing up, him having the dilemma of which way he wants to go in life, his conflict between his family and his uncle, and that’s balanced against him becoming a superhero and all these universes and all these crazy characters. With all these other stuff happening, it was a real challenge to keep finding ways to bring it back and tell it to Miles’ point of view, so you always felt like you were in the movie with him, and that he didn’t get lost in the larger action. That was the biggest challenge, because that meant that you had to look at the other elements of the movie and decide how much or how little each meant.”

For a lot of people, it seems it’s hard to grasp exactly what the animation style of Spider-Verse is. How can you describe it to the general audience?

Peter Ramsey: “I’d say we chose a style that had a more graphic and punchier feel. It doesn’t feel soft and smooth and flowy. It feels like you’re going through comic book panels, hitting strong poses and making dynamic images. Because of the way it’s animated, which is in CG animation, but we’re animating at a lower framerate, so it’s a very different look and feel. But I think it makes the film feel a little more unique, little more graphic, little punchier like a comic book, but it is different. For some people, it doesn’t feel like watching the usual animated film, it’s definitely a different style, but intentionally for a different effect.”

Spider-Verse had the biggest, most diverse crew working on it, and this goes along with the theme of the movie, as in everyone can wear the mask, everyone is a hero. How did this environment inspire the movie and its’ story, and vice versa?

Peter Ramsey: “There’s a saying that goes “whatever movie you are working on, somehow, it ends up reflecting your life.” With our movie, you can easily see all these people, who came together from different walks of life, to try to make something special. At most we had about 800 people working for the movie across all departments, and the most exciting part for all these people was the chance to do something unique and special. When you’re around with people who are all very excited, it transcends, and everyone starts picking up that energy. I think this definitely happened with our movie. Everyone wanted to animate on Spider-Verse so bad. The effects people at Sony ImageWorks, were begging for more and more every time we asked them for something. Everybody got into the spirit of it, and this just shows you what happens when you can let people be creative, to access their creativity in their work, and give them the chance to be an artist, instead of a part of a machine.”

You are the first African American director to have won an Oscar for an Animated Feature. You are also really the first of them to appear at View Conference, as well. What’s your opinion on this?

Peter Ramsey: “There have actually been quite an amount of African American animators working in the industry in recent years, and there are lots of them behind the scenes in positions that don’t get too much attention. I have a very good friend for example, who is the head of the effects animation department in Frozen 2. Another, Bruce Smith, who did some directing and writing. Historically, however, there has been very few, and that mainly had to do with education, as many African American people didn’t have much access to that level of art education in the United States, and the ones they did were very expensive. When I was growing up, I was 10 miles away from Hollywood, but I never knew that I could ever work in the industry, because I hadn’t seen many people doing the jobs that I wanted to do, and that was another big barrier that’s still prevalent, so whenever I have the chance, I always talk with young people to encourage them. It’s taking a little more time, unfortunately, for us to get reputation, but there are a lot of people now who are getting more opportunities. “

Seeing all this positive reaction to Spider-Verse, both in terms of it being an animated movie and it being a comic book/superhero movie, do you think this will give the chance for studios and filmmakers to branch out and similarly create new, more unique and different animated/comic book movies?

Peter Ramsey: “I don’t know if there are plans for that at Marvel or other studios, but in the animation industry, there’s a lot of excitement to that approach, and a lot of people would be really into that, whether it looked or felt like Spider-Verse or not. A lot of people approached me, thanking me for making this, opening up what we can do, people feel freer to branch out and be riskier with something different. A lot of people feel Spider-Verse gave them that chance finally. At Sony, there are a lot of projects with different filmmakers, and they really seem to be committed to being different and artistically ground breaking.”

Do you also read comics? Do you have a favorite version of Spider-Man, and if so, who is it?

Peter Ramsey: “I used to be a big comics reader, and I still do now. I have always been a huge fan of Marvel, their stories are what got me into comic books. I also read DC, and in the States, we got to read many European comics that were also more artistic and underground through a magazine called Heavy Metal. I have a very soft spot for Miles, of course. You get really attached to whoever character you’re working on for a movie, and he has a lot of personal stuff bound up in there. A lot of people who worked on the movie feels a lot like Miles, I definitely do. I always loved original Peter Parker, as well. The first comic books I bought with my own money always had Spider-Man in it. It shocked me how in the story, he had the dilemma of being angry, because he felt he is cursed by being Spider-Man, he doesn’t like it, but he still has to do his job, and that extra layer of complexity of them as a kid got me hooked.”

Do you have any future projects that you are working on?

Peter Ramsey: “I do. I’m Executive Producer on an animated feature in Netflix. I think I will be involved in the Spider-Verse sequel in some way. It’s very early to say on that, they just started talking about it, but I would love to return to the world of Miles and help continue tell that story.”

Dimian has been in the VFX industry for 27 years. His first work at Sony ImageWorks was on Hollow Man, creating transformation effects on the characters, and has since worked on many Sony Animation projects, such as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Hotel Transylvania and most recently, Spider-Verse.

We had the chance to meet and talk with him at VIEW Conference. Below is our interview.

What were your many inspirations when starting to work on Into the Spider-Verse?

Danny Dimian: “It started with the idea that we wanted to do something different, something that people had never seen before. We were all excited about the idea that this will be a comic book movie, so we started with the actual comic books. The ones that looked more interesting and felt that had the most life in them were actually the really old comic books, the ones that were printed kind of weirdly, before you had the technology that allowed you to have smooth, perfect images. They had lots of half-tone errors, and other misprints, and all that. Not to mention that these drawings were drawn on paper, not digitally on a computer. The other inspiration was, because we had to make them move, there wasn’t a lot of examples of comic books moving. Anime was something that obviously inspired us, we looked at the way they handle movements and effects. There was an art that was appropriate in a lot of anime movies. Even pop art, the classic J.W. Turner paintings, anything in the fine art world that looked interesting to us, so we had lots of examples of that. All this inspiration turned out to be great, because the final answer was a little bit of everything.”

Since you mentioned the imperfections of comic books and how it inspired the movie; it’s very interesting because usually, when you are working with CGI, everything has to be perfect with no mistakes. How did you achieve this imperfect look?

Danny Dimian: “Some of it was embracing the things that went wrong in our early tests. Anything that looked interesting but wasn’t what we expected, we would put those aside and we would go “let’s remember this, maybe we can use this somewhere.” Another thing was to use hand drawn elements. In the effects, the majority of the hero pieces were actually hand drawn in 2D, then we used them with 3D in conjunction with simulation. The simulation can do timing, scale, and a lot of things, but the cycles themselves were hand-drawn. There were also all the tools that we wrote to draw on the screen. Our character designer was able to draw all the expressions on our models right on the flat screen, so not on Maya, not in 3D, but flat, to the views that he sees. Those were automatically converted into geometry, so that the rigging crew can rig them, and the animators can animate them. But they all started the way that our character designer decided how he would draw it, the origins of every piece of line work was from him. And they’re not attached to the surface, so with that, you get this imperfection that they’re not connected. The computer is still controlling it, but because it’s not connected, you’re not getting computer perfection. With every step on the way, we were looking for places that we could “break” something. Literally break it in the sense of traditionally, it’s not the way you do it.”

It’s really great how the film takes the best from CGI and hand drawn animation.

Danny Dimian: “Yeah. When we started, we only knew two things. We didn’t want this to be a cartoon. To us, cartoon is a sensibility that is not right for this. It has too much squash and stretch to 2D, and we didn’t want that. At the same time, we didn’t want anything that made people compare it to anything realistic. In the middle of those two, there was this big dark area. That’s another thing I like to tell people who are working on new things, that it’s okay to not know, to get deep into a project, and still not have it all come together. We didn’t really know how the pieces would fit until very late. We just knew we had all these pieces that we liked.”

You’ve been working with Sony for quite a long time…

Danny Dimian: “Yeah, I’ve been doing this job for about 27 years, and I’ve been with Sony for 20 years, starting with Hollow Man.”

…and you worked on Cloudy and Hotel Transylvania…

Danny Dimian: “Yeah, and before that, Surf’s Up and Monster House.”

And these are all very stylized compared to the standards that you see from a Disney or Pixar film, and then there’s Spider-Verse, which is totally stylized. Can you talk about the evolutionary process?

Danny Dimian: “One of the things that helped us on Spider-Verse was the fact that we had executive producers and directors and us, and we all wanted the same thing. Moreover, we had the protection from the Executive Producers to let us do it, and that’s not common. Another thing that helped is having too many Spider-Man movies. Before our film, there was already eight of them. When we did ours, we had to ask, “What do we do to tell people to see yet another one?” That’s where it started. Also, at ImageWorks, we don’t really have a style, and we didn’t have a big hit before. We’re not Pixar that had hit after hit, and each film having a house style, to the point where it’s not really a good idea to do something different. Success is not always a good thing. I mean we did well, but we never had the hit that stuck or constrained by. The fact that we do films not just for Sony Animation, but for other studios, as well, we get to do all these different looks. That leads to a methodology, a pipeline, where you’re always doing something new, and you’re used to that. We had done different things, like Hotel Transylvania, where Genndy Tartakovsky has a style that uses a lot of squash and stretch, but also he wants them shaped in certain ways to the camera, so we had all these tools where it takes the geometry and brakes it to do all kinds of things to the camera. We used all these things in Spider-Verse, as well, to make things look more like the way you might draw it, and not how the geometry would do.”

In the movie, there are six Spider people, each with their own different and unique style. Was there any challenge in balancing out these clashing looks?

Danny Dimian: “The short answer is, yes there was, but not as much, because we had fewer shots. If there were more shots, then it would’ve become more of a challenge to make sure those looks are efficient enough. We had 2700 shots in this movie, because of all the multi-panels and such. Animation now has lots more shots, than it used to. A 2D animated movie usually was 85 minutes and has 1200 shots. The thing that made it not much of a problem was two things. We have a very flexible way of exploring looks just because we didn’t know where things would go, and we had already tried so many things. The other was that you can muscle through many looks if it doesn’t require too many shots.”

For a lot of people, it seems it’s hard to grasp exactly what the animation style of Spider-Verse is. How can you describe it to the general audience?

Danny Dimian: “The animation is definitely a mix of all kinds of ideas. The best way I would describe it is the way I describe the look of the film, and that it’s a collage. It borrows from everything to try to find a new language to fit for this new content. It’s not appropriate for everything, though. We have a couple of other projects at Sony now that are going to look different from what you’ve seen, and it’s meant to look more inspired by physical drawings and paintings, but they don’t look like Spider-Verse at all. For us, that movie’s style is not appropriate for anything except what it was meant for, a comic book. The ideas, however, is what will and should be expanded and put into movies. The idea that people should look at their story and decide what is the best way to tell that story.”

It’s so rare that something like this happens for an animated movie.

Danny Dimian: “This is one of the times that happened to me, as well. Cloudy was something similar, and so was Hollow Man, in a different way. That was fun, because it was a technical challenge. Beforehand, there was no way of doing transformations of bodies, so we had to write the tools ourselves. I talk to people about this experience and what it was like to doing something without any sort of user interface, just people writing code, and writing a script to explain how you visualize things.”

Can you talk about any of your future projects?

Danny Dimian: “As soon as it’s announced and the first trailer comes out, then I can. I can tell you that there’s more stuff coming, and people feel good about things being different. There’s a willingness to try different things, and I’m excited about this, as well. There are little cracks in the wall of CG being just for kids’ movies. If you’d ask me five years ago where I thought animation would go, I would probably be sad with the thought that I might die without ever making an adult animated movie, but it’s less likely that will happen now. Who knows, it’s still a little hard, because it takes a lot of time, effort, and money. But I think people are starting to come around to the fact that it can be just a technique, not a genre to make anything animated. But we will see something out of Europe first before seeing something in the US.”

Spider-Man: Un nuovo universo, uscito a Natale 2018, ci ha raccontato le vicende del teenager di Brooklyn Miles Morales e delle infinite possibilità del Ragno-Verso, dove più di una persona può indossare la maschera. Miles infatti ha incontrato tante diverse “spider-persone”, tra cui Peter B. Parker, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker e Spider-Ham.

Il film ha vinto l’Oscar al Miglior film d’animazione 2019, il Golden Globe, i BAFTA e molteplici Annie Awards e VES Awards.

Oltre al sequel di Spider-Man: Un nuovo universo, Sony Animation è al lavoro su numerosi titoli originali tra cui The Mitchell VS The Machines e Vivo. Entrambi questi titoli saranno sperimentali in termini visivi, seguendo la scia di questo grande successo. Inoltre è in lavorazione allo studio anche un sequel: Hotel Transylvania 4.

Nato e sempre rimasto a Los Angeles, California, Peter Ramsey ha iniziato la sua carriera come storyboard artist in numerosi film live action tra cui titoli come Minority Report, Cast Away, Independence Day, Men in Black, Il Grinch, Essere John Malkovich, Fight Club e L’incredibile Hulk.

L’incontro con il mondo dell’animazione è arrivato attraverso DreamWorks Animation, per la quale Ramsey è stato innanzitutto storyboard artist (Shark Tale, I pinguini di Madagascar) e in seguito regista esordendo prima con un corto di Halloween (Mostri contro Alieni: Zucche mutanti venute dallo spazio) e poi con il suo primo lungometraggio, Le cinque leggende (2012).

Il successo è esploso poi l’anno scorso grazie a Spider-Man: Un nuovo universo, pellicola che Peter Ramsey ha co-diretto con Bob Persichetti e Rodney Rothman per Sony Pictures Animation. Il film, che ha presentato al grande pubblico il personaggio di Miles Morales e tutte le possibilità del multiverso, sfoggia un look drasticamente diverso dalla tipica computer grafica, puntando sulla stilizzazione e sull’integrazione con effetti realizzati a mano. Spider-Man: Un nuovo universo ha vinto il Premio Oscar 2019 al Miglior film d’animazione e ha regalato a Ramsey un Annie Award per la miglior regia di un lungometraggio animato. È il primo regista afroamericano a vincere il Premio Oscar nella categoria animazione.
