In una recente intervista con MetroUK, Sir Tim Rice ha confermato le impressioni del collega con cui creò la leggendaria colonna sonora del film animato del 1994, arrivando addirittura a dirsi pentito di aver partecipato alla première del remake di Jon Favreau a Londra. La motivazione, come già espresso da Elton John, sarebbe lo scarso rispetto mostrato alla colonna sonora e al contributo dei due artisti.

“Sinceramente avrei voluto essere coinvolto maggiormente in quel film. Ho pensato, abbastanza ingenuamente, che il nuovo team avrebbe voluto utilizzare al meglio le canzoni che esistevano già. Ma avevano molti obblighi, e c’erano altri artisti che volevano inserire le loro canzoni. Penso che avrebbero dovuto dare la priorità a me e a Elton per scrivere qualcosa di nuovo.”

Elton John e Tim Rice hanno scritto due canzoni per Il Re Leone del 2019, ma soltanto una ha visto la luce del giorno… e non nella modalità desiderata dai due compositori.

“A me piaceva molto la ballad riflessiva Light of the World. È una di quelle canzoni che diventano sempre più belle a ogni ascolto, ma capisco come mai abbiano pensato: “oh, è troppo seria e troppo pesante”. [Never Too Late, n.d.r.] doveva essere inserita da qualche parte nel film, magari anche soltanto un minuto, e poi la versione completa sarebbe stata nei titoli di coda. Ma nel prodotto finale, Never Too Late – che per me è una canzone bellissima – non compare. Quando la ascolti pensi: “ehi, ecco una bella canzone di Elton John”. Solo che le parole sono fortemente legate alla storia, ma in quel modo lo spettatore non se ne accorge. Probabilmente eravamo molto in basso nella catena alimentare in questo progetto. Al contrario, nel primo film siamo stati coinvolti dal primo giorno e ci siamo divertiti molto a creare le canzoni, che hanno avuto un grande riscontro e sono state fondamentali nel successo della pellicola.

Spero che sia chiaro che non sono stato contento al 100% della colonna sonora del film, ma d’altra parte non voglio sembrare ingrato o offeso. Elton, invece, non è stato molto felice, per usare un eufemismo. Ma fortunatamente nello stesso periodo è uscita una sua canzone in un altro film per la quale ha vinto l’Oscar, cosa che mi ha reso entusiasta per lui. Sarebbe stato carino ottenere di nuovo la nomination, perché la nostra canzone era ben fatta, ma era soltanto nei titoli di coda e sembrava semplicemente aggiunta lì a caso”.

Tim Rice ha poi paragonato brevemente la sua esperienza con quella per il live action de La Bella e la Bestia, al quale ha contribuito in virtù di paroliere del musical (il paroliere originale, Howard Ashman, purtroppo non è più tra noi).

“Non era il mio film, non mi sentivo in diritto di dire cosa fare o meno con La Bella e la Bestia, perché non erano le mie canzoni. Ma con Il Re Leone, avrei dovuto impormi dicendo: “ehi, ragazzi, pensate alla musica!”. In un certo senso, la colonna sonora è l’ultima cosa a cui hanno pensato, ed è stata abbastanza penalizzata per questo”.

Secondo quanto dichiarato, il compositore ha creato ben tre nuove canzoni per il lungometraggio, insieme all’amico Tim Rice. Il film, se aveste ancora qualche dubbio, sarà un musical come il Classico (anzi, a questo punto avrà anche più canzoni di quello). Dopo aver detto che non saranno usati brani provenienti dal musical di Broadway, ha spiegato che tuttavia ha tentato di scriverne di simili come “Forever More“, canzone che aiuterà la Bestia a spiegare d’aver capito cos’è l’amore. Il secondo nuovo brano, invece, si chiamerà “Days in the Sun” e sarà una sorta di ninna nanna cantata dagli oggetti viventi del palazzo per ricordare com’era la vita nel castello prima della maledizione. Non ha spiegato nulla, invece, sulla terza canzone.

Il cast comprende, finora, Emma Watson nel ruolo di Belle, Dan Stevens in quello della Bestia, Luke Evans (Gaston), Emma Thompson (Ms. Bric), Kevin Kline (Maurice), Stanley Tucci in un ruolo inedito, Ewan McGregor (Lumiere) e Josh Gad (Le Tont).

Vi ricordo che il film sarà diretto da Bill Condon. La sceneggiatura è stata curata da Stephen Chbosky, partendo da una bozza di Evan Spiliotopoulos. Il film uscirà in America il 17 Marzo del 2017.
